Living life via your ethics and high standards no matter what is going on around you

Tammra Warby talks to Victor Perton about Australian Leadership. Dr. Tammra Warby is a medical practitioner at Coomera on the Gold Coast and Co-author of “The General Practice Exam Handbook.”

Victor Perton: Tammra, what are your favourite stories of Australian Leadership?

Tammra Warby: I have admired the resilience of Ben Roberts-Smith, and the pioneering work of Professor Fiona Wood. For her to be a mother of six and contribute to medical advancement the way that she has is an amazing demonstration to me of what can be achieved through clinical leadership. Similarly, my UQ lecturer of 20 years ago Professor Ian Frazer, showed what is possible through the vision and continued commitment. All these leaders have a common thread of humility that I admire.

Victor Perton: Tammra, what are the unique qualities of Australian Leadership?

Tammra Warby: I think living life via your ethics and high standards, no matter what is going on around you is a quality of Australian Leadership. As well, the commitment to a vision and the ability to engage people in that vision and inspire others to work towards it is crucial.

Victor Perton: Tammra, what do Australians want of their leaders?

Tammra Warby: I believe we want integrity. Too often people are not following through on what they say they will do, or float between ideals, but we want leaders to stand up for what they believe in, and earn our trust through their continued commitment to that ideal.

Victor Perton: Tammra, who have been the leaders in your life's journey?

Tammra Warby: I was inspired by attending the recent Harvard Medical School CME Career Advancement and Leadership Skills for Women in Healthcare. I’ve also been fortunate to be mentored on my journey by several wonderful doctors including Dr. Debbie Ibbotson of The Family Practice Emu Park and Dr. Michael Donohue of Yeppoon Family Practice, who inspired me to stretch myself, and brought deep insight into how to do that.
